The month of February marks our miniature schnauzer Tootsie’s 5th Gotcha Dayanniversary. As many of you know, she is also recovering from cataract removal surgery – and recovering nicely, I might add! In any case, this seemed like the perfect time to do something special for her.
And so we shall! Our toy drive this month will benefit Miniature Schnauzer Rescue of Houston [MSRH] in Tootsie’s honor. It will be an online nationwide drive, and we will raise toys in the following ways:
So spread the word and help us help needy dogs!
Yesterday afternoon I made my dogs Season’s Eatings and Peas on Earth Cakes from last months edition of Everyday with Rachael Ray. Teeny’s little sister Tootsie is having her cataract surgery tomorrow, so I wanted to spoil her a little bit beforehand. The cakes were a big hit, especially with Teeny – as you can see in the picture below, he just held it in his mouth for a few minutes before he dug in. I think he was savoring the flavor! Want to make them for your own furry friend? The recipe is below.
Season’s Eatings and Peas on Earth Cakes
1/2 cup cooked brown rice
1/4 cup frozen peas [thawed]
1/4 cup rotisserie chicken [skin & bones discarded and meat shredded]
2 tbsps plain breadcrumbs
2 tbsps chopped fresh parsley
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Teeny and Tootsie wanted to wish their Auntie Karly a furry happy 19th birthday!!! We love you Karly!
Our sweet dog friend Phabulous Phoebe is having an emergency drive benefitting two different rescue organizations in Queensland, Australia. Click here to visit her website and see the “wish list” of needs they have put together. She is also accepting donations via PayPal.
We got to know Phoebe’s human Tammy through her dog Coco, who is one of our friends on Twitter! I really want to help support this worthy cause, so all toy donations generated from the sale of our one-for-one toy will be sent to Phoebe and included in with the goodies sent to Australia
My animal organization, Teeny’s Friends, is in the running to win a $5k grant in the Pepsi Refresh Project. In case you are not familiar with the project, Pepsi gives away $1,300,000 each month to fund “great ideas” that will help make the world a better place. There are 4 categories: $5000, $25,000, $50,000 and $250,000. The public votes on their favorite ideas and the top 10 ideas in each category win the grant money.
It occured to me that I should not ask you to vote for Teeny’s Friends in the Pepsi Refresh contest without telling you WHY you should vote for us:
Reason #1 you should vote for us – Lots of studies have shown that socialized dogs are many times more likely to be adopted from shelters. Many people do not realize what valuable aids toys are in this socialization process. Shelters, often under-staffed and running on tight budgets, do the best they can but many animals are not given the one-on-one attention they need. Having access to toys can make a big difference, and we do our best to provide these toys to as many local organizations as possible [through our monthly toy drives and the sale of our official “one-for-one” toy].
Reason #2 you should vote for us – Many times we raise toys for organizations other than shelters, such as animal sanctuaries. These sanctuaries often house animals with disabilities, disfigurements, or facing end of life issues. These guys certainly deserve a little fun, don’t you think?
Reason #3 you should vote for us – The majority of toys we are able to donate are raised via monthly toy drives at local Austin organizations. We estimate we raised around 400 toys in 2010 alone. The organization is self-funded and run on a volunteer basis part-time. If we won the Pepsi grant money, it would enable us to broaden our reach and provide even more needy dogs with toys.
Reason #4 you should vote for us – This face!
Voting in the contest ends on January 31st. You can vote on their website [click here] once a day. You can also vote by text messaging 104976 to Pepsi (73774). Teeny and I truly appreciate your support! We’re up against some “big dogs” who have more resources than us, so every vote counts!
If you have any questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact us by email at [email protected]!
Robin with Doggie Styles [who is hosting our July toy driveand also groomed our Tootsie earlier this week] just emailed me with a special offer for everyone who comes in to donate a toy to our cause.
Anyone who comes in and drops a toy off in our bins before the end of our toy drive on July 23rd will receive a $10 off coupon for a full groom or a $5 off coupon for baths.
Please note that you don’t have to use the coupons before the 23rd – you just have to come in and donate a toy before then, since that’s when the toy drive ends.
If you live in the Austin area and have a pet that needs grooming, you should take advantage of this offer! Help out a needy dog and your own pooch at the same time. Robin & co did a GREAT job on our Tootsie, and her prices are extremely reasonable! Click here for information on Doggie Styles, including their location and how to get in touch with them.
Here’s a cute pic of Tootsie in the car on her way to an afternoon of beauty at Doggie Styles K9 Boutique and Day Spa, who is hosting our July toy drive! When I pick her up this afternoon I’ll take some “after” pictures and post them as well.
Update: They did a fantastic job! She looks so great and even put a cute little bandana on her!
Our July toy drive at Doggie Styles is officially going on as of noon today! I stopped in to set up the bin and couldn’t believe what a cute little shop it was! Everything was extremely clean, and they have a ton of great pet accessories, including sports team items.
Doggie Styles is located at 2105 Justin Lane here in Austin. Justin Lane off Burnet Road, about halfway between Anderson Lane and Koenig. Click here to see a map of the location.
Our bins will be there until July 23rd. They are still thinking about who they would like to benefit from donated toys, but I will update you with that information as soon as I have it. In the meantime, please stop by and donate if you are able!
Update 07/12/2010 – I just spoke with Robin and she has decided that the July toy drive should benefit the Austin Humane Society.
The Anipal Academy Awards are going on next weekend [click here to read a previous post about them] and I won’t be able to be there. BOO! Mom and Dad are going on vacation to the beach in Mexico next Friday the 16th through Monday the 19th. I’m gonna do my best to stop in and walk the red carpet so that I have an excuse to put on the beeaauutiful gown that you guys chose in our ‘what to wear’ poll. Spoiler alert: I’m gonna put it on before they even leave, just in case. [I promise I am a boy doggie I just like the way silk and other soft materials feel against my fur!]
Even though I cannot go, I want to encourage all of my anipals to go. We all work so hard to improve the lives of less-fortunate anipals, and this is a great chance to honor each other. Teeny’s Friends is nominated in the “most kind-hearted” category. We don’t expect to win [I didn’t even vote for myself – there were too many other good people nominated!] but I am truly honored to be included with the great group of other nominees.
My Twitter friend Daffy @no_crybaby_doGs is making custom souvenir magnets in honor of this event. You can order a magnet with your own anipal in his/her red carpet costume! It costs $8.50 + shipping. Click here for more information, including how to order!
